Talk topics

Each can be a keynote, a lecture or a conversation.

The choice before the choice

A decision rarely begins with a blank page. Long before anyone chooses, a situation has been named, some options have been made visible, and other possibilities have been left outside the frame. Ihsan talks about where decisions actually start, why the naming matters more than the options, and what leaders can examine before they commit.

Why smart people misread consequential decisions

Capable teams rarely fail for lack of analysis. They misread the situation: the assumption nobody stated, the category doing quiet work, the question nobody asked. Ihsan explains what an independent examination of a decision looks at, and why the person closest to the decision is often the worst placed to see it clearly.

ThinkerBuilder: a scholar who builds, a builder who thinks

Investment banking in New York, teaching in Shanghai, a decade founding and leading a firm, doctoral research on entrepreneurship. Ihsan talks about what moving between worlds does to the questions you ask, and why he thinks the next generation of public thinkers will be people who build, and builders who think.

Interview questions

Starting points for hosts and editors. Others are welcome.

  1. You say a decision rarely begins with a blank page. What is already on the page before anyone starts deciding?
  2. What does it mean to examine a decision rather than advise on it?
  3. You refuse implementation and strategy formulation. Why is refusing work part of the offer?
  4. Your firm publishes a starting fee of USD 50,000. Most firms hide their prices. Why show yours?
  5. You use no testimonials and no client lists. How does a buyer learn to trust you?
  6. What did investment banking teach you about how big decisions actually get made?
  7. Wall Street, Shanghai, your own firm, now doctoral research. What did moving between worlds change about the questions you ask?
  8. Your research examines how new ventures get judged and granted legitimacy. Where are founders most often misread?
  9. You are building several public ventures while completing a doctorate. How do you decide what not to do?
  10. What is a consequential decision from your career that you examined carefully, and what did the examination change?
